Everything turned out differently than expected!
Charlotte, Bastian and I got to Wickedcamper at their Broome depot shortly after 9am which was probably too early. Our Tankgirl was still on the trailer and the depot looked more like a graveyard of to-their-limits-and-beyond-used vans.
James is the only person working at the depot and had to handle some pick-ups and smaller repairs first before he could divert his full attention to our complaint about the Batman van and that we require another, reliable van for our onwoards journey to Darwin. There were only two other vans available but James told us that the Batman van "is the best of the three"...
Well, Charlotte and I needed to be in Darwin within the next two weeks to travel on further whereas Bastian had more time at his hands and no time constraints as us. So we took the only car that was available and in a fairly good condition: this 2-seater "Johnny Cash" Toyota Corolla!
The back seats have been taken out and with some wooden boards and a foldable mattress you can actually sleep in the car! After I signed the paperwork for this swap Charlotte and I had to give Bastian his share of the rental cost and dropped him off at the YHA hostel. Charlotte and I transferred all our stuff from the Batman van into this small car, got some lunch and more groceries in Broome before I set off in this small but great car to Derby (150km away). We stopped shortly at the Boab Prison Tree.
At the Visitor Information Center we got some more information of what to see there and stopped at this transport and communication museum. Well, I think it is. As it was closed I am not exactly sure.
And here you can see the main road of Derby. Yepp, that's it. Nothing more really to see except for the jetty where we headed next.
We walked over the jetty, watched some people reeling in their crab traps, saw some little eagles and the export facility. Interesting...
Then we watched the sunset. It was really busy on the jetty. People brought their camping chairs and met with their friends and even brought beer to see the sunset. I have seriously no clue when I have seen the last time a sunset in Germany.
And then we had to find a place to stay. We first searched for a free camping place to stay but couldn't find anything that felt safe. There are a lot of Aborigines walking around the place who looked at us suspisioucly, so we got a bit scared. In the end we decided to stay at the Caravan Park but it was already full! It was fairly late and dark and we just wanted to sleep as we would have a long day tomorrow. So we stopped at a parking lot behind a sporting complex for the night. I didn't sleep too well although it was quite comfortable in the car. Charlotte and I are just the right size to fit in there.
Anyway, our next stop: Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek in the West Kimberleys!
Yours Derby-in-a-small-car-visiting-and-sleeping Stefanie
