Dear strange formation lovers,
Well, getting up early is definitely not my cup of tea but if it needs to be than I will get up at 6:30am. Charlotte and I got breakfast and everything ready by 7:45am to walk around Leicester's rest stop area. We were looking for someone who has a 4WD and would possibly have some spare seats available to take us into the Bungle Bungles. After just a few minutes we approached a man who just checked the engine of his car and asked him if they are heading into the Bungle Bungles.
We explained that we don't have a 4WD but are willing to share the fuel. He was immediately willing to take us with him and asked his wife if it would be OK for her as well (she was in the mobil home). Apparently she said Yes without a seconds thought as well and we agreed to meet up again at 8:30am when they were ready to head off. We were so lucky!!!
Carol and Paul turned out to be some really funny people! Like REALLY funny! I had to laugh out so often on the drive into the Bungle Bungle that the time passed so quickly and suddenly we have already hit the dirt road.
Suddenly we also encountered creek crossings with water in them. Carol and Paul didn't even know that there would be creek crossings on the way to the Bungle Bungles!
I loved it! Paul drove extra fast through them so there would be some water splashing around :-)
Well, although it is only a 50km journey to the Visitor Information Center of the Purnululu National Park it took us two hours to get there. The dirt road was fairly rough and winding and the dust from other cars obstructed the view and there were I think about 5-6 creek crossings involved. We finally made.
I like the landscape as it looked so green. But don't be mistaken by the fluffy looking appearance of Spinifex! Don't get too close or you will regret it. I think it is the least eatable grass in the world.
We stopped at the Elephant Rocks. Can you see them?
This is the car of Carol and Paul. Paul let out some air of the tyres for the rest of the journey.
We drove to the Southern Part of the Bungle Bungles and stopped in the car park at the beginning of the trail to Cathedrale Gorge. These formations just look so odd but fascinating.
We started the walk to Cathedrale Gorge immediately. It was very warm but a nice easy walk on sandy ground. In wet season here everything is flooded and you can't even get there.
Funny enough we met someone who looked exactly like Paul. And they even had the same humour as they hugged each other and cried "BROTHER! Where have you been?" Paul is the one to the right.
After just 30 minutes or so and admiring the colors of the formations we reached the famous Cathedrale Gorge.
We stayed there for a while eating snacks and speaking to Paul's brother and his wife. We also got our picture taken with Carol and Paul.
On the way back to the car at noon Charlotte and I took a detour on the Domes trail, just a 400 meter loop walk. I secretly took a picture of Charlotte who took a Selfie :-)
After a short lunch at the carpark we drove 1.5 hours back to Leicester's rest stop where we said Goodbye to Carol and Paul who would not take any money from us for the fuel. They said they were going there anyway and we have provided the park pass, so they saved money on the national park entrance fee. Unfortunately they headed in the opposite direction towards Perth.
As we arrived back at the rest stop at 3:30pm we had nothing else to do than to relax. We made pasta with mushroom and peas in tomato sauce for dinner and got to bed very early at 7:30pm.
Our next stop: Wyndham in the East Kimberleys!
Yours Bunge-Bungle-with-funny-friendly-strangers-visiting Stefanie
