Kangaroo Island - Seals, sand-boarding and wild animals

Howdy partners,

The next morning we got up at 8am and had to rearrange our luggage so we would not have to shift everything around to find our belongings. Anyway, we made it to the Visitor Information Center of Penneshaw at 9:30am and got lots of information about camping grounds, opening times of attractions and some useful tipps about the island. Then we drove to the first attraction of the day: Seal Bay! This is a bay on the South coast of the island where the endangered species of Australian Sea Lions rest after their three-day hunt and also breed. We decided for the self-guided boardwalk as it was a lot cheaper than the guided beach walk. This meant we could not get to go to the beach but we still saw a lot of seals.

After an hour we drove to Little Sahara. Oh yes, that is the name for these sand dunes and the main attraction there is to do some sand-surfing. So we rented a stand-up board for the three of us after lunch and had some good practice on them for over an hour. But it was very windy and the sand was going absolutely everywhere. We had great fun.

This exhausting training left us driving to the more relaxed Vivienne Bay which was once upon a time one of the most beautiful beaches in the world before some other beaches have been discovered. And I can understand why. We first went to the bay itself and then to the beach.

After some sun-bathing we set our camp at a caravan park where a little kangaroo and lots of birds came close to our car. We also saw a koala climbing up a tree.

It was a long day and after some more pasta which we could cook in the camp kitchen we got to sleep in the roof-tent without some sea noise in the background. Our next stop: Hanson Bay and the Kelly Hill Caves!

Yours seals-watching Stefanie
