Kangaroo Island - Rocks, seals and sunset

Cheers mates,

On Wednesday morning we got up at 7am and after breakfast we sat off for Hanson Bay. It was very cloudy and windy when Sébastien and Jan set off for the 9km Hanson Bay Hike.

I drove the car to the end of the hike at the Kelly Hill Caves. As I arrived there before 9am and the first tour wouldn’t start before 10:30am I went on the Burgess Hike to look for Echidnas but did not see any.

At 10:30am I joined the first tour to the caves with all its Stalagtites and Stalagmites. Annie the tour guides told us lots about the history of the caves, its discovery and the early expeditions. At the end she even turned off the lights, also this last candle and it was pitch-black! Scary…

At 11:20am the guys were back from their hike which apparently was too easy and not as spectacular as they hoped. We had a quick lunch and then I waited for them to do the cave tour. At 1pm we drove away from the caves to the Flinders Chase National Park in the West of the island. We sorted our overnight camping and the park entry before we made our way to the world-famous Remarkable Rocks!

From there it was only a 10-minute drive to the Admirals Arch where we saw lots of New Zealand Fur Seals scattered around to rest from their hunting. We even saw some of them fighting and swimming around to cool off.

Not far away is the lighthouse of Cape du Couedic where we had a quick photo stop.

Then we turned onto West Bay road – a very rough and bumpy dirt road. For 20 km it took us nearly an hour to get to the camping ground where we were the only ones for the night. We sat camp, had a early dinner (again pasta, what else?) and then went to the lookout to view the sunset.

The guys stayed at the lookout but I went down to the beach and took some more pictures there. Which one do you like the most?

Unfortunately the sunset itself wasn’t really good because of the many clouds at the horizon but the golden hour before was pretty nice.

A bit disappointed we decided to play cards in the tent and used Jan’s very bright torchlight. We spoke about a lot of things in these two hours. It was really nice. Unfortunately the light attracted a lot of mosquitos into the tent… Our next stops: lots of beaches on the North coast!
