Indeed,
Markus and I arrived on Wednesday morning at Sydney International Airport and
every time when I thought „I am in Australia, I made it to Sydney!“ at first I
felt like crying for having finally reached my long-dreamed-of destination and then … well, actually I cannot believe it…
Strange,
isn’t it? But Markus feels the same way. Of course it’s very warm (about 23
degrees Celsius), big streets with very high buildings, lots of Asian people
and it feels great to be here. But we both think that this town could also
exist somewhere in the very South of Europe. After checking into our hostel (a massive building called Wake Up) near
the Sydney Central Station and freshing up from our long journey we headed North. We walked along Pitt Street, took in the vibrance of this huge city, ate
something for lunch, observing all the new impressions around us until we arrived
at the Circular Quay with a fantastic view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, this huge
cruiser and the Opera House!
We went to
the right towards the Rocks and then made our way across the Harbour Bridge
which took us about half an hour. Here is the proof:
We ventured
around the area underneath the Harbour Bridge on the other side where you have a great
view on the skyline of Sydney.
After a
while we took a ferry back to Circular Square and made our way to the
world-famous and one of the most iconic buildings on earth: the Opera House! (We took this picture ourself, this is not of the internet.)
We walked
all the way around it and then went inside for a guided English tour. Thanks
again for this gift to the EADS Energy Strategy Team! We had a fantastic time,
our guide Vicky was very informative and funny and we had the chance to go into
two of the halls and around various floors and rooms. Here some impressions (we
had headsets, so we could always hear our guide clearly):
Our head
full with information about the architect, the construction and some stories
about plays, singers and orchestras we made our way back to the hostel through
the Botanical Garden which is beautiful.
Back in the
hostel we made ourselves ready for bed. From getting up on Monday at 8am until
Wednesday 10pm local time (so 12am German time) for us 52 hours have past. In
this period we each only slept about 5 hours! To avoid a jet-leg we figured we
had to sleep in the two planes but it was too uncomfortable. You can imagine
that we both were more than exhausted and so our first day in Australia ended
very quickly.
Yours Sydney-Opera-House-visiting-and-very-tired Stefanie
I almost cried with you, when reading your description of arriving in Sydney. Funny enough, I have never been been sightseeing there. Perhaps, you just take it for granted when living "relatively" close by.
