I know, crocodiles, boardwalks and ice cream is a strange combination. But I will explain in a minute.
On Sunday morning we first went shopping for our picnic lunch which we have planned to have in the Daintree Forest National Park. Then we set off to the Daintree River and arrived just in time for the next Crocodile Express River Cruise. This is basically a one-hour boat tour in a zig-zag on the river and the skipper tells you more about the river, the environment and the animals, especially crocodiles. And lucky enough we spotted two, the first one a bit hidden and the second a rather small one:
We also saw some birds and got more information about the root structure of mangroves. After the river tour we took the ferry to enter the National Park.
Very steep and windy that Cape Tribulation Road and our first stop was the Alexandra Lookout where you have a great view over the valley.
The next stop was a boardwalk, similar to the one in the Blue Mountains National Park. They are easy to walk, so even in thongs (flip-flops) you can explore all the plants and cross little creeks. We had our picnic lunch close-by and were stung by flies several times despite the insect repellent :-( Unfortunately, everything was on low tide and low on water although we are in the middle of the wet season. Apparently this is a very mild summer so far...
Our next stop was the Daintree Ice Cream Company where you get four scoops of ice cream for 6.50 AUD made of the fruits from the forest. We had the flavours mango, raspberries, macadamia and wallue seeds:
The flavour was very intense and nice after lunch. On our windy journey North we explored another boardwalk and stepped onto Myall Beach before we got onto Cape Tribulation. That part of Australia that Captain Cook apparently saw first and it looks beautiful from the lookout.
But we never entered the water or even went near it of fear for crocodiles. It was past 4pm and we were a bit exhausted from the drive and all the walking, so we headed back to our hotel and prepared our third aussie BBQ. This time we tried the FREE BBQs on the beach which were really dirty until Markus cleaned our plate until it shined again.
BBQ getting boring? Not with some kangaroo kebabs! Yeah, I know. One day I feed them, the other day I eat them. But I just had to try and to be honest... I am not convinced of it. It is not a soft meat and has a strong flavour to it but it is not completely bad. Anyway, that's it for today. We are preparing for another exciting day tomorrow: Scuba Diving at te Great Barrier Reef!
Yours Daintree-rainforest-exploring Stefanie
