Melbourne - Secret Gardens, Albert Park and St. Kilda

Hi there,
The internet is very slow here, so it takes ages to upload a couple of pictures. Anyway, after the two-day-tour to the Great Ocean Road we were exhausted. So on that following Saturday we slept in, had some lunch in our hotel room while we waited for the pictures to upload in this blog and only went out at about 4pm to buy some tickets at Federation Square. What kind of tickets? You will find out in my next entry about Monday ;-)
We got to Harbour City where the newly opened Melbourne Star was operating. I have to take some pictures also at night because it is flashing like a lunatic in all sorts of colors and combinations.

After that we had a big dinner in Little Collins Street and went to the hotel again. On Sunday we had bigger plans. From Federations Square we started the self-guided “Secret Gardens” Tour through the Botanical Gardens on the other side of the river. It was actually really nice but I did not feel very well after the vegetarian all you can eat (it exists! On Swanston Street), so we had to stop several times and rest. It took us until 5pm to finish the tour.

Then we got on the tram towards Albert Park to the semi-permanent race track of the Formula 1 Grand Prix! Semi-permanent means that it is usually a normal street but for the F1 they put everything up, so it is not permanently a race track. But the pit lane is permanent and we headed there. A dream came true for Markus!

Then we drove further South by tram to St. Kilda, to stroll along the beach and then down the pier to watch out for wild little penguins coming in after sunset for their nests. I have seen so many sunsets here in Australia but I cannot remember the last sunset I saw in Germany. Hmm!

A lot of people waited patiently but even one hour after sunset no penguin in sight. Even the penguin team was confused as there should have been a few by then. At 10:15pm the crowd has melted to very small groups when there was finally some movement in the water directly in front of Markus and me! Everyone got excited and huddled towards us and someone held a red light to the rocks when we saw… a rat… Yeah, we left after that, quite disappointed but that’s nature.
Yours garden-walking Stefanie
