Melbourne - Job applications and waterfront

Howdy partners,

It’s Saturday afternoon and I am finally feeling cool again at 23 degrees Celsius. It’s been over 40 degrees Celsius over the past three days. The sun was burning down, the wind was as hot as a hairdryer and you were thirsty and sweaty all the time whilst outdoors. Even in our 4-bed-dorm it was just horrible to stay in. So I decided to stay in the dining/internet/meeting area of the hostel where a ventilator was supplying a bit of a cool breeze and have a look for jobs on the internet. But it was hard to concentrate with all the people around, eating and talking.

So on Friday I called Carly again and asked if I could come over to her air-conditioned house to write some applications. She is such a kind person and so helpful. I have spent three hours there writing cover letters, enhancing my CV and sending out emails. I think I have submitted about 20 applications! It is fairly easy to apply here in Australia because to get going you only need a resume/CV. Not even a picture is required. Some people want a cover letter with it and others also request references. But nobody asks for certificates or anything like that.

But before continuing applying I decided to take advantage of the cool weather on Saturday and did the self-guided Waterfront tour. It took about two hours to complete and was actually quite nice as it took you to places a little bit away from the CBD and you could explore a bit more of the architecture and sculptures along the Yarra river.

This is the Polly Woodside. You can buy tickets and actually go onto it. Sometimes there are events happening on it.

This is the Seafarer's Bridge which I find very nice to look at and to photograph.

This is the Melbourne Exhibition Center opposite to the Crown Entertainment Complex which hosts a huge casino.

This is the Webb Bridge. Very interesting design. Apparently it should combine Aborigine art and the flow of the river and intergrate with its surroundings. Well, the design somehow missed these points a little bit in my opinion...

This is some art on Southbank in front of the Crown Complex. It is nicely illuminated at night.

Then I came across a little promotion setting for the Formular 1 Grandprix which will take place in Melbourne in March. I have still do decide which type of ticket I will purchase but I will definitely be here for the race!

That was a nice change of view onto the city and after lunch I dived into the giant pool of the internet again and wrote another 15 emails to all sorts of companies around Melbourne. There have been quite a few very interesting sounding positions and one or two would absolutely fit my profile! But being on a Working Holiday Visa might make it a bit difficult to get something. So if anybody has a tip for me or knows someone around Melbourne who could need someone like me, let me know :-) PLEASE!
So, it will stay interesting. Good night or good morning or whatever time of day it is.
Yours waterfront-exploring-and-job-searching Stefanie
