Tasmania - Wineglass Bay and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary

Servus everyone,
At 7:30am we left Bicheno towards Wineglass Bay. The fitter ones of our tour went up Mount Amos to get the beautiful view over the bay and the not so fit ones drove to a lighthouse, most of us walked at least up to the lookout but I decided to also go all the way down to the actual beach, called Hazzards Beach Walk. It was a very steep walk and after an hour the arrival at the beach was quite emotional.

After an hour of walking around, enjoying the view and seeing a wild kangaroo with its baby I walked all the way up again. Turned out to be much harder to get back to the carpark than getting to the beach. But while walking up a lot of people came down the walk. So the early start meant that we had the beach and the lookouts almost to ourselves and we also avoided the midday heat. At 11:30am everyone made it safely back to the bus with lots of impressive from the bay, from the lookout, from the lighthouse or the best view from Mount Amos. Then we drove for lunch to a little town called Ross which lies between Launceston and Hobart and serves as an important stop. At the four corners of the town we got some lunch at the bakery and ice cream and wandered briefly through the streets.

We then arrived at our next highlight of the day: the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary! We saw all the main Tasmanian animals like kangaroos, koalas, wombats and of course the Tasmanian Devil! There were a lot of other animals and the animal caretakers would let you touch some of them and answer all your questions patiently.

After 1.5 hours the sanctuary closed at 5pm and it was time for us to head back to Hobart at the YHA Hostel. It was also time to say Goodbye to some more of the tour guests who have to leave us.

In the evening dinner was provided by the tour operator in a fish restaurant at the Hobart harbor. This was a great opportunity to get everyone together in a nice atmosphere to exchange on the experiences and addresses.

I am staying one more day with the tour for the next stop: Port Arthur!
Yours beach-reaching-and-animal-stroking Stefanie
