Melbourne - Going out and about

Good morning world!

In the last five days I have spent each afternoon/evening with someone else around the city which is great as I totally did not know what to do with myself. As I already wrote in my last entry I haddinner and a last walk around Melbourne with Laura on Thursday. On Friday I had to check-out of my room and check-in in the afternoon into another 4-bed-female-dorm in the same hostel (Nomads All Nations) and met three Australian girls from Adelaide. They were so nice and friendly and as I had no other plans for the evening they asked me to come along with them for a night out. They wanted to go to the casino which is only a five minute walk from our hostel, so I got into the only nice dress I had and headed out with them. As alcohol is expensive they already had some Wodka shots with slush on the way to the casino! Oh dear… In the casino we had a look around and one of the girls played at a table and won 10 dollars! She was so happy about it and wanted something to drink but well, drinks are even more expansive in a casino.

Her brother had written her to go into a super-hip club called Boutique which was supposed to be only a five minute walk from the casino. Because of the new and very uncomfortable mega-high-heels they wanted to catch a cab. The driver told us that the club is a 10 minute drive away! We got there and as we got out of the cab they told me that the entry costs 20 AUD. WHAT??? That club should be awesome for such an entry fee. It certainly was very elegant and everyone was really dressed up. And cool, old music (Destiny’s Child, Backstreet Boys, even Britney Spears… weird but cool) was playing. Honestly, the drinks in there were even more expansive than in the casino! I still had a drink and we danced a lot.

What confused me was their behavior towards their smartphones. They were not able to just dance for five minutes without taking pictures or videos or checking their messages. Sometimes they just stood on the dance floor and typed some messages! And they were not the only ones who did this. So strange. As it got past midnight some guys started to hit on them, so I decided to sit somewhere a little bit aside. At 2am we decided to go back to the hostel and one of the girls was really drunk, unstable on her feet and swearing a lot. Really funny and entertaining!

We ate a doughnut each to soak up the alcohol and to avoid a bad hung-over the next morning and got into bed very fast. My first real night-out in Melbourne with some truly Australian party girls! What an experience. Not sure if I want to repeat it though…

On Saturday they unfortunately had to check-out of the hostel, so sad. I slept in and then met with Carly to have a look at the Lonsdale Street Festival, the annual Greek Festival of Melbourne. It was much smaller and less crowded than expected. Not a lot of food options and the atmosphere was not as expected either.

We left after an hour, wondered around the city in air-conditioned shopping centers (it was nearly 40 degrees Celsius) and then walked to Carly’s home to watch TV and have dinner together. It was such a nice and lovely evening. When I walked back to the hostel at 10pm it was still 30 degrees Celsius outside!

On Sunday I decided to not leave the hostel until 4pm to avoid the afternoon heat. Two new girls entered the dorm and we decided to go into the city together. We got on the free city circle towards the Docklands and got off at Swanston Street. We walked through the Greek Festival (a bit more crowded now) and through Chinatown. One of the girls left to go to the supermarket whereas I had dinner with Anika on Swanston Street and then we sat down in Alexandra Gardens to talk and talk until the sun was down. That was a very interesting conversation as she explained how she changed in the last seven months through her time in New Zealand and Australia from a fashion girl to an independent girl (in a nutshell).

On Monday I was busy writing more postcards, get them posted during lunchtime (a stupid idea as everyone was in the Post Office then) and searching on the internet for inspiration about what to do next. At 4pm I met Clare who I got to know on the Tasmania Tour. She is a nurse in Melbourne and she was happy to meet me for dinner. But first we walked around the city center but instead of her showing me some hidden lanes I showed her! She was so amazed as she barley knows the CBD. Funny, isn’t it? At 5pm we had some Cappuccino and Hot Chocolate at the QV Square and then dinner in a new Asian restaurant next door. We ordered different dumplings with noodles and it was really good. Afterwards we got some Frozen Yoghurt for dessert.

We walked through the CBD and then alongside the river on Southbank and talked and talked and talked about so many things. She is so funny but very understanding and helpful as well. She confirmed what I already thought: I would not get an office job without an Australian certificate! So here I am now to decide what to do next as I will definitely not get a job in Melbourne in my profession or similar. I luckily still have money to do some more travelling but I either have to go back to Germany earlier than expected or look for a typical backpacker job. Not really sure yet…

Yours jobless-but-not-lonely Stefanie
