Kangaroo Island - Roadtrip, beautiful bay and rooftent

Kangaroo Island calling!

Okay, Monday morning it was time for my first self-organised tour with someone else than Markus. Sébastien, Jan and I met at shortly past 9am at the WickedCamper depot in Adelaide to get the payment, the paperwork and the equipment ready for our five-day trip to Kangaroo Island. As there was no Toyota Corolla available we got a (fairly ugly) Nissan Cube instead. But in regards to our luggage it turned out to be good enough to fit everything in.

After we pushed also a table and some chairs into the trunk I drove us to the supermarket. This was already quite a challenge as Sébastien my co-driver wouldn’t give me a strict “Go left/right”. Instead he was polite and said “You could go right/left here or straight and then turn, as you like”. That doesn’t help if it is busy on the roads and you have to decide quickly which lane to get in. Anyway, we made it to the supermarket, bought all the stuff that we would need for breakfast, lunch and dinner and then with the help of the satnav that I still have we got out of the city towards the South.

We didn’t go straight for the ferry departure in Cape Jarvis but drove to Mount Compass to have lunch there as we had some time before the 4pm ferry.

After lunch we drove to Victor Harbor and arrived there at about 2:30pm. We got some more information about Kangaroo Island and had a quick look around especially at the horse tram before we headed off to Cape Jarvis.

We arrived in time for the ferry to arrive. I parked the little car safely on the deck and then headed to the front where we had a good view to Kangaroo Island. The ferry is very expensive for this short 45-minute drive. It had cost us more than the car… At least the sea was very calm and I did not get sea-sick.

Unfortunately the Visitor Information in Penneshaw was already closed. Sébastien took over the wheel and got us to Antechamber Bay where we would stay for the night. I really liked the beach there.

Luckily Jan knew how to erect the roof-tent and honestly it took not even 5 minute to put it up. Fantastic!

We had pasta with tomato sauce for dinner. We had to cook pasta twice in the little pot and it was really dark by the time we finished. The guys went off to clean the plates and all. I was really scared in the dark, especially as some other campers warned us about 2 meter long snakes and lizards. AHHH! We saw one little kangaroo, some birds, a mouse and a possum near our tent before we went to bed. It was a bit tight in the tent with three people in their sleeping bags but okay. Just the mattress was too hard for my back. It was nice to hear the ocean in the background. The next stop: Seal Bay!
